Galaxi Dance mats are compatible with Konami’s Dance Dance Revolution Grand Prix* on the PC platform, or any other step rhythm game of choice on PC, however the mat’s design, software, and instructions are primarily focused around “Step Mania 5” a free, open-source rhythm video game engine that allows tons of customization options and the ability to download and install your own music tracks.

What is an FSR?

An FSR, or “Force Sensing Resistor”, in essence, works as a variable input resistor capable of detecting an area of pressure. In other words, it’s a plastic strip that can detect how hard you’re pressing on it. Traditional button switches operate on an “ON/OFF” status, and while functional, leave a lot to be desired in terms of adjust-ability and reliability. Many players find themselves modifying their dance pads using what is commonly referred to as “Penny Modding”, in which players adjust the sensitivity of their dance pads using pennies and varying thicknesses of foam and tape. As you can imagine, this is a less than ideal way of adjusting step sensors, leading to inconsistent or dropped inputs, causing players to miss arrows and lose out on their score.

How do I adjust the sensors?

Adjusting the sensors requires installation of a few software packages that will then run a web app in your browser to control the level of sensitivity of each panel. Please note that we are currently working on streamlining the software in an ongoing development process, and the installation process may require some in depth knowledge of the Windows OS to get working. Don’t worry, the instructions are all laid out on our “Setup & Software” page. The software is largely based on the open source code created by “teej” Sujeet, located at https://github.com/teejusb/fsr along with minor modifications made to operate with the EZ-FSR control board that powers the Galaxi Mat.

What is “stamina” play?

Stamina play, as the name implies, is a different approach to playing dance games, by focusing on conserving stamina to hit as many notes as possible in a given song. Players attempt to minimize movements to save energy to keep playing extended marathons, sometimes going for hours at a time. Although it can look a little silly from the outside to watch someone wiggle their toes, it requires a surprising amount of exertion and balance in order to keep up with the ever increasing play speeds.
